$1000 Cost of Living Rebate for Households

Affordable, reliable power is critical to families. Because Queensland's power assets are publicly owned, and because we’re making multinational mining companies pay their fair share of tax Queenslanders are able to share in the benefits. From July 1 Queensland households are set to receive $1000 off their power bills.

We can do this because Queenslanders own their power assets - the generators, the transmission and the distribution. We're working hard to keep downward pressure on prices because every dollar counts right now.

That’s what our government does, delivers real help, for every day Queenslanders who are doing it tough. Helping Queenslanders with the cost of living our number one priority. Which is why we are delivering the biggest power rebate ever by any Australian government.

Underwood locals Dorothy and Arthur told me that thanks to the rebate, they won't have to pay a power bill for a whole year! That's going to help them put more money towards enjoying their retirement.

Ruth won't have to pay a power bills for the rest of the year which means she'll have more more in the bank to pay for her daughter's new netball uniforms and shoes!

Who is Eligible to receive the Cost of Living Rebate?

The rebate is being provided to residential customers wo are separately charged for their electricity. Customers who don't receive a separate electricity bill (eg. where electricity is included as part of their rent) are not eligible to receive the rebate payment.

Electricity providers will automatically apply the credit, so Queenslanders don't have to apply.

Will this add to inflation?

The evidence is that these rebates will take the pressure off inflation.

We're very confident that even though this is a nation-leading package, it won’t add to inflationary pressures.

Recent data from the ABS shows that the $550 electricity rebates have lowered electricity bills by 9.5%, contributed to inflation in Queensland being lower than the national average and power bills remaining lower than under the LNP.

The information from the RBA and Treasury is clear, these rebates bring down electricity prices and this helps to take the pressure off inflation.

How is this being paid for?

This vital measure to reduce household bills will be delivered thanks to the Miles Government making multinational mining companies pay their fair share.

The direct cost-of-living relief puts money back into the pockets of Queenslanders when they need it.

This is about delivering a fair return for the people of Queensland on the natural assets they own. It is fair for both industry and Queenslanders.

Coal is a non-renewable, non-replaceable asset that ultimately belongs to Queenslanders. When prices are high it is fair that a proportion of the price is returned to the people.

Royalties are structured progressively. It is only when the price reaches the threshold that the higher royalties kick in.

How will you address power prices over the longer term?

The Miles Government is acting to provide direct relief in the near term.

Our nation-leading Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan invests in new, publicly owned renewable energy, Super Grid transmission assets and deep storage which will create more than 100,000 jobs.

The Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan will put downward pressure on prices by delivering more cheap, renewable energy for Queenslanders.

Independent modelling indicates that under the Plan, lower wholesale electricity prices will flow through to lower retail bills, with the average annual bill for a household projected to be $150 lower in 2032 and $1,495 lower for a small business, than without a Plan.
